Chapter 33; Accidental Video
[[Today, when the gear turns on, you get a lovely view of the sky and the calming sounds of water nearby. It's a beautiful day, for those of you not outside.
This serene setting is broken by a squeal from a Pokemon and a splash, then all falls quiet and calm again.
It's a few minutes before you hear something again. This something being another splash. And then on screen appears a Dratini with a quite pathetically wiggling Magikarp in it's mouth.

With a happy chirp it disappears off camera again, only to return a few moments later to rub all over the 'gear. And then off it goes. There's a squeal, a splash, and a few minutes later the familiar sight of this Dratini with another Magikarp, struggling in it's grasp. It disappears, it reappears to smother the Pokegear, rinse, wash, repeat.
This show goes on for some time, until finally - during one of its rubbing sessions - it stops and looks up. And then it simply begins to trill in excitement. Almost like if it doesn't make noise, it'll explode. It's also wiggling.
There is so much wiggling from this Dratini.]]
...V-vodka...what are you doing?
[[It seems this Dratini is none other than Vodka Derptini - also lovingly known as John - belonging to resident Rose Lalonde. And said trainer has found the little dragon Pokemon.
She appears momentarily on screen, picking up the 'gear, before turning to look at...oh.
It seems all those Magikarp the little wiggling dragon type had been collecting are in quite the pile of flopping. Meanwhile, the aforementioned culprit of this karp congregation is sitting next to said heap, wiggling as if waiting for praise.
Apparently those fish are a gift for his trainer.]]
...That's...very nice of you, John. Thank you very much. How sweet.
[[A few pats to the Dratini's head, followed by a multitude of elated chirps, lilts, warbles and purls, and the 'gear is shut off.]]

Action;
And surely he's aware of that.]]
I will keep that in mind. Are there any other rules I need to know?
Action;
[ He studies her from behind his shades for a moment, then releases her wrist, reaching up to idly hook his hand on a branch overhead. For a few moments, he's just quiet, examining her. ]
Action;
[[She's a little unsettled by the quiet. When is Dave ever quiet? The released hand settles on his leg instead of pulling back to herself as she resists the urge to show curiosity.]]
Then I would be able to have it on hand at all times for study.
Action;
[ He glances briefly downward, without moving his head, when her hand comes to rest on his leg, but he makes no move to displace it. He's growing more and more accustomed to Rose touching him, and he's been left with the distinct impression that she enjoys it.
Which leads him to his current thoughts, and the reason for his relative quiet. ]
... So is this like jumping right back in where you left off with the last Dave, or what?
Action;
...not really, no. At least, not for quite the same reasons anyway.
Action;
He's long perfected the art of pretending to make eye contact, which is what he does now. He continues facing her, but his eyes wander a little uneasily as he speaks. ]
Were you close with them?
Action;
...not really. The last Dave that was here, we were a little closer, but he was here for such a short amount of time, and most of that was spent by me nursing him back to health. So I couldn't say if we'd ever grow closer or not. I can't tell you much more than that about him.
[[And she'd like to avoid talking about the first one if possible.]]
Action;
What about the first one?
[ He looks back to her, now that he can study her without being studied in return. ]
Action;
He...[[...Maybe she shouldn't mention the hat.]] was also kind enough to purchase me a warmer coat at the time. Johto is awful in the winter, despite how comfortable I am with the colder temperatures.
Though, despite all of this, he also had an impeccable knack for reminding me of just how much of an insufferable prick you really can be. And often too. When he left, we...weren't on the best of terms. And really, that's
a gross understatement.
[[After a pause, she snorts.]]
He also managed to incur injury, and left me to tend him. Though at least then I had the assistance of John, Jade and Karkat as well, but that was living hell with your Brother here.
Action;
He's thinking, dryly, that it doesn't surprise him at all that some Dave somewhere was that much of a fuck-up. He's thinking that he wishes it weren't the one who was around when Bro was, and he's thinking that he's sorry about it, but he won't say that. That was some other Dave, and that's some other Dave's problem. His problem, here and now, is Rose, and she seems to be doing just fine.
And he's also thinking that he's glad, for some reason, that he might be the one to get the closest to her. He doesn't think about that for too long, though. ]
... Did you ever see either of them with their shades off?
Action;
[[You probably never want to ask about that time with Bro. It's kind of embarrassing.
Then again. The text they sent him might be worth it. But you'd lose any respect you had for John and Rose.]]
Action;
He actually turns his head away a little now, glancing down out of the tree. ]
I'm just surprised you've never asked. I figured it was because you'd seen them already. Shit, Vantas had.
Action;
[[Snort. Oh lord, the Karkat/Dave thing...]]
Well, you two did have a flame. There's a distinct difference between someone you are both in hate and love with and your sister slash friend.
Action;
[ He plucks a leaf from the branch overhead and examines it idly. ]
Were you and Strider the First really that bad off that just bringing it up would've been homewrecking?
Action;
Action;
[ It should have been a dry statement, by all rights, but his tone is fairly flat. ]
Action;
[[Now she kind of glances up at him.]]
...Though I don't find myself minding it all that much.
Action;
[ That was dry, amused, and he drops the leaf to glance back at her. ]
Action;
Or perhaps you wouldn't.
[[And a smirk accompanies that.]]
There is, after all, a block function on the Pokegear, and I am now very well versed in using it.
Action;
[ He's relaxing again, looking amused without really smiling. ]
Action;
He won't.
Action;
You're kidding, right? Bros before hos, sis. Besides, he's my forevergirl.
Action;
He has yet to betray my trust. Besides, I somehow doubt he would be so easily willing to repeat the utterly despicable language that would be used.
Action;
You do realize 'bros before hos' is a universal law, right? Like the sun rising in the east, or Scully never believing Mulder.
Action;
Perhaps you'll find yourself surprised. I dare you to try.
