Chapter 10; Action/Voice for Karkat, John and Jade

[What happened]

[[She certainly didn't mind his company, as much as she bickered with him when he insisted upon taking care of her, and insisted upon making sure she was comfortable, and insisted upon getting her more blankets, knowing she would want them. As much as she argued she didn't need the help, she did appreciate it.

And so, even though the subject struck up yet more sibling snark-ery, she appreciated him offering to make her soup.

Still had a hard time expressing it though.]]

Dave, I do not care how delicious you claim it tastes. I do not care how insistent you are upon the fact it is good for me. I do not want soup.

[[He just laughed at her, and that simply annoyed her more.]]

Relax Rosie. You're not getting any better by throwing a fit.

[[Looking away with a snort, the girl glowered at the window. When a spoon clattered from being dropped, she thought nothing of it.]]

Would you please refrain from making a mess, I would really hate to--

[[Cut off by the sound of something far bigger slamming into the stove finally forced her to turn her glare towards the kitchen.

Which Dave was currently occupying the floor of.]]

...D-Dave?

[[Unfurling and scrambling from her nest, she quickly crossed the hotel room and stared down at the boy a moment, before bending down to carefully touch his forehead - which judging from how red the skin was and how it was already starting to bruise, that must have been what she heard colliding with the stove.

Carefully she shook him by his shoulders.]]

If you are trying to tease me to force some form of sincere affection from me, th-there are better ways to go about that. This is unacceptable, and I will not stand for it, so I request you sit up and cease this tom-foolery.

...Please?

[Voice for Karkat]

[[When Karkat answers, he is greeted by Rose, who definitely does not sound as put-together as usual. She's not in a panic, but her voice is shaking a little.]]

K-karkat. I require your presence immediately. Dave just collapsed, and I am unsure of what to do about i-it. I am unable to move him on my own, and am fairly certain we should not leave him on my kitchen floor.

[Text for John and Jade]

[[A text is also sent to John and Jade, as Rose is aware they would both want to know.]]

John, Jade, I would like to inform you that Dave, currently, is passed out on my kitchen floor.
I am having Karkat come over to help, and fear having more than him and I might make this complicated as it is a fairly small kitchen and room, so please do not worry about assisting.
I simply felt you would both like to know.

[[At the look from Karkat, she kneels down beside him to give him some reassurance, a hand rubbing at his shoulder, but is startled by John before she can say anything.]]

Well, I hadn't actually seen him pass out, John. I just...heard it. And when I looked, he was on the floor.

[Really, Dave could just be unconscious. He could, which would be temporary and not as bad as it could be. But the fact that Rose seemed worried? That got to him, and well. Things escalate, and Karkat's far from one to stay calm easily, even if it's usually anger that's the problem. So he lets Rose rub his shoulder, just staring back down at Dave again as he tries to figure out what to do.]

[But steps, and--]

John?

[He looks up, glancing at Rose as she explains, but mostly at John. Sunglasses still in hand.]

Wait, wait--you mean--yo-you don't think he damaged his think pan when he fell, did he?

[He's not surprised Karkat's here, but he is kind of surprises him that he didn't notice until the former-troll actually said something. It takes a minute for him to remember the word "think pan," because really he's just so worried that he's not thinking about weird troll anatomy terms right now.]

I don't know dude! But I mean...a bruise like that...

[He's not going to say it outloud, but the look on his face should say enough.]

[[Brain damage. That certainly doesn't sit well with Rose either.]]

We should likely move him. Get him onto the couch, possibly, and out of this cramped space.

After that, we will focus on nursing his head.

Shit. Shit shit fucking shit.

[John, you are the absolute worst for allaying his fears.]

[He looks to Rose--moirail. Moirail. Trust your fucking moirail. Go go troll instincts, what still remain in his brain, because she is his fucking rock in this.]

[He holds out the shades.]

Rose, hold these, and don't you fucking break them. John, help me pick him up, and be fucking careful. If you drop him, I am going to break your damn nose, got it?

Dude, I'll break my own nose if that happens...don't worry about that.

[He is DEAD SERIOUS about this. He kneels down, ready to help Karkat in whatever way he tells him to. Hopefully between the two of them, moving Dave shouldn't be much of a problem.]

[[She takes the shades gingerly with a nod, moving to make sure their path to the couch was clear, and that the couch no longer was occupied by a pile of blankets and a tissue box.

She then stays out of their way, just holding the shades to her chest to make sure she wouldn't drop them.]]

[John's seriousness is refreshing, and he has to pause a second - that's one of those good qualities Rose pointed out to him before. Still, he says nothing regarding it.]

[Soon enough, he has Dave's torso propped up, head against his chest and arms supporting his torso.]

Grab his legs. Tell me when you feel like you've got a good hold on him, then I'll count, and we lift on three, okay? Then I'll lead back towards the couch. Rose, tell me if there's anything behind me; I don't want to back into it.

[And assuming John does at told, he would count and lift, slowly and carefully carrying the coolkid back towards the couch.]

Right.

[He nods and does precisely what he's told, being as careful as is humanly possible. Once Dave is safely placed on the couch, he backs off a bit and crosses his arms, looking worried and unsure of what exactly to do next.]

[[She does as asked, guiding Karkat until Dave is placed onto the couch. While John wonders on what to do, Rose does what she knows should be done.

From the kitchen she retrieves an ice pack and two towels, returning to the three of them. She wraps the ice in one towel and very gently places it against his forehead.]]

This will at least help with swelling...

Better.

[At least he has somewhere safe to lay now. But Karkat's still worried, and definitely fidgety as he looks down at him. Rose at least is more gathered than him or John - and when she returns, he moves out of the way to let her put the ice pack on his forehead.]

... What's the other towel for?

[Just as Rose requested, John is trying his best to stay out of the way and do only what is asked of him. He's grateful that at least one of them seems to have some idea of what to do and he has no intention of questioning anything Rose does or brings with her. She knows what she's doing, he's sure. Though he does wonder what that other towel is for. Surely something important that he's just not seeing because he can't think straight right now.]

Just in case we need it for something.

[[She places it on the couch arm, sighing. And then, she gets up again and moves to search her bookshelf.]]

I am not...quite sure what else to do about this. I have a book here, however, on injuries.

[[After a few more moments of searching, she pulls one out and flips through it, pausing to read before turning back to the other two.]]

We need to sit him up, keep him elevated with his head above his heart. I will fetch my pillows to help keep him propped up.

[[With that, she heads to her room to do just that.]]

[Karkat's pretty lost, too, arms soon folding across his chest in an effort to stem some of his fidgeting. But as Rose goes to search her book, he turns to John.]

You're supposed to be his best friend, aren't you? Does he have any sort of medical conditions you know about? Anything?

[Of course, when Rose says to heel his head elevated, he goes right on over to prop him up until she brings the pillows in. No matter how much he might beat him up normally, a kismesis is no use dead, and his other feelings certainly add into his concern now.]

What about you, Rose? Seriously, if either of you've got an idea what might have happened, fucking tell me.

[Jumping a bit at being addressed, he turns his head to look Karkat in the eyes, then sighs and looks down at Dave.]

If he did, he never told me. I have no idea what could have caused this. I wish I did though...

Not...that I am aware of either, but we have never touched on such a subject.

[[Her next expression is that of internal battle.]]

...I. Don't really want to.

But it might be a good idea to contact his brother on such a subject matter.

Though I am worried he would attempt to move him further, take him to his hotel to watch him...which I am reading we really shouldn't have done ourselves.

Damn.

[But at Rose's suggestion, he looks back to her, frowning sternly.]

No. Not his brother, not that douchebag. I'm not letting him fuck shit up anymore, even if he is his weird human familial relation. That asshole tried to convince me he was going to eat Dave when he got here.

And why the fuck didn't you check that book first, Rose? If we hurt him more with this--

[He lets out a breath through his teeth, looking to Dave again.

[He runs a hand through his hair, looking to the side, and exhaling deeply.]

To be honest, I don't like the idea of letting his brother know either. But at the same time...he probably does know more about Dave than any of us. If this is something serious...

And don't talk to Rose like that Karkat. I know you're upset but it's not her fault. I mean, did the thought of looking in a book first cross your mind at all?

[[Even with John sticking up for her, she just can't stop herself from snapping back at the former troll.]]

Karkat, perhaps I am just as worried as you are? Perhaps I do not think quite as clearly when I am just a little panicked? Perhaps I am sc--

[[Facepalm to the extreme. Why were they bickering?]]

We need to not fight right now. Fighting will not do anything to assist anyone.

As for the topic of his brother, I could perhaps lock the door, and then attempt to simply inquire about any illnesses he may have. Curiosity of his paradox sister, whom has only recently learned of this fact?

[Karkat goes to snap at John, because ... well, it's John, but really, a variety of factors. He's irritable with worry, and Rose is his moirail, and he's prone to snapping at people anyway. But when Rose snaps at him first, he can only stare for a moment.]

[Huff.]

What the fuck ever.

Put some sort of furniture in front of the door, too; one day I found my door looking like someone had kicked it in - no fucking clue why - so obviously just locking it isn't that great on its own.

[He rubs one of his temples, his other arm remaining folded in front of his chest.]

Do you think the nurses know anything about treating humans? I mean, they can't just treat pokémon can they?

[And even if they don't...any adult is better than Bro. Any adult.]

[[She was just about to call Bro too, but pauses.]]

If not, surely they will know someone who can!

[[That was possibly the best idea she had heard the entire time, and quickly moved to slip on her shoes and coat.]]

Do lock and block this behind me, you two. Watch the windows as well. Speaking of his brother has me wary. The last thing we need right now is him barging in while any of us are gone.

[[Serious stern look before she heads towards the door.]]

[Karkat executes a perfect FACEPALM x2 COMBO.]

God fucking damnit. I just saw Gamzee there the other day after he licked that fucking Grimer; why didn't I think of that?

[But as Rose gets ready to leave, he lowers his hands.]

Trust me, I will. I'm not fucking leaving if I don't have to, not while he's like this.

Wait, Rose. I'll go instead. If you're still sick you really don't need to be running around like this.

[He crosses the room as quickly as he can, reaching the door before her and slipping out of it before she has a chance to.]

I'll be right back.

[He disappears into the hallway, closing the door after him with a small snap. He takes a few steps down the hallway before a thought hits him and he doubles back, calling through the door:]

...and move the bed in front of the door if you have to! Seriously, don't just use a chair.

[[Surprised is certainly an understatement, and she watches him leave without a word to stop him.

After a moment, she regains herself and locks the door, the windows following.]]

Karkat, I believe the armchair would suffice. Will you please help me move it?
