Chapter 12; Voice for John

[[It was rather early, and yet she found she couldn't sleep. Her second night in Karkat's hotel still felt like awkward, even if they weren't sleeping in the same room as one another, and this was cause for slight insomnia.

At first she tried typical things to aid her slumber. Pacing. Reading. Warm milk. Relaxing music. The Pokemon Lullaby, as Dave had suggested. And when she finally ran out of ideas, she decide she would at least make use of her time.

And so, retrieving her Pokegear, she sends a call to a friend of hers, hoping it would be enough to wake him from whatever slumber he is in.]]

[Wait what?! Where did that even come from? He looks somewhat horrified now. He really needs to learn how to use that brain filter thing that everyone else seems to have. Thinking before speaking is always a good idea.]

[[What?]]

[[...Well then.]]

[[No more smiles for you, John. You reminded her that she was wearing one.]]

...I suppose I will take such opinion into consideration.

[[Burying herself awkwardly into her book, but not without mumbling one more little statement.]]

[He pauses for a moment, seriously hoping that his face isn't as red as it feels.]

...I'll be right back.

[Getting up from the table, ghost book still in hand, he quickly disappears among some nearby shelves. Once he feels he is a safe enough distance away, he leans slightly against one of the shelves, bringing the ghost guide to his forehead with a small smack.]

"It looks good on you?" Really? Really?!

[Mentally beating himself up now because, gosh, that was so lame.]

[[She nods and lets him go, wondering what he's up to but certainly not going to follow at this point. But she might glance and stare in that direction for a bit. Because she's still trying to come to terms with the fact he actually said that. This is John, after all.]]

[After regaining his composure, which takes about five minutes and even then he still looks pretty flustered, he turns to the shelves and stares at the books. He needed an excuse for why he left after all. Obviously the best answer was that he needed a new book. After a few more moments of searching, he returns to the table, two new books in his hands. Sitting down, he opens one of them (something about foreign pokémon) and begins reading.]

Welcome back.

[[Ah, he was just getting another book. That makes sense. And might be a good idea. These books she found aren't turning out to be very helpful.]]

What are you reading now?

[He looks up and kinda nods at her "welcome back" he doesn't trust himself not to say something stupid again so he's just going to try and keep quiet.]

[Too bad there's not acceptable non-verbal communication form to answer that second question.]

I'm trying to find out about this egg Dave gave me. Basically all he told me was that it's something called a Shinx. [And something along the lines of "just take it and shut up, Egbert."] And the pokédex didn't really have much to say about it so I don't think it's native to the area. but I'm guessing it's an electric type since nine times out of ten the egg shocks me when I touch it.

[You'd think he'd have learned not to touch it after the second time it shocked him.]

...Why do you continue to touch it then?

[[Not that she is too terribly much better herself, wanting to make sure the similar egg she received is warm and well taken care of. It's hard to do that without touching the egg.]]

I am curious as to what it is too. And also curious as to where this generosity of his is coming from, but I suppose that is something I will need to discus with him.

[[Just. Leaning over John's shoulder now in interest.]]

It's just really hard not to...I mean when Casey was an egg-- ah. Never mind! [For the record he did not carry the egg around with him everywhere. Or sing to it. Or sleep with it next to him. Nothing of the sort, no.]

Oh? Did Dave gave you one too?

[Flipping back to the index now. Shinx, Shinx, Shinx...let's see...]

He did, and offered me about the same amount of information as he gave you. He just made comment on how much I owe him now, as he has given me both a Shinx and Eevee egg.

[[Sigh. She was to be his breeding slave, she could already sense it.]]

Well now I'm kind of worried too, this is the second pokémon he's given me too. Oh! Speaking of Eevee eggs, I bought one earlier today.

[There it is! Flipping to the correct page now. Oh isn't that cute?]

Well, that's it. [He tilts the book a little so Rose can see the page better.]

Oh you did? That was a very smart move, from what I've read on them.

[[Leaning in to see this new Pokemon!]]

...That is actually a fairly cute Pokemon. And as expected, electric type.

Yeah, a man in Goldenrod was selling them, apparently his ditto got a little too friendly with all his pokémon. He said he was France. Literally France. The country. Weird guy, but he seemed nice.

[Oh goodness that's awful close. But it's just to see the pokémon, right? So it's all good!]

Yeah it really is.

...I. Am simply not going to comment on that.

[[After glancing the page over, she reaches forward to flip the page.]]

I wonder what it evolves into?

Why's that? Too weird to be true? He said there's a country-person for all the countries back on Earth. It was an interesting conversation.

[There's a small intake of breath as she reaches forward. But this is still all okay. There's nothing happening here John, you're getting worked up over nothing. Breathe, dude.]

Uh...

[Staring at the picture of Luxio now.]

...looks like poképuberty is not kind to Shinx. Does it evolve again? [Holds the page up a little and tries to peek under it so that Rose is still free to look at the page on Luxio.]

Yes, that is precisely why.

[[Scanning this page now, she hums thoughtfully, and then turns the page for him.]]

...I believe I owe Dave a proper thanks, as he has insinuated. I am going to enjoy having such a Pokemon on my team.

[Luxray? Sweeeeeeeet.]

Same here. Hmm...I should start thinking of names now...what's a good name for a lion?

[He's thinking really hard about this. Nicknames are the most important thing about pokémon.]

That is a very good question. I personally will wait to observe how my Shinx acts before deciding a name. I would rather one fit his or her personality rather than simply the species.

Well yeah I'm going to do that too. But it doesn't hurt to have a list of ideas, right?

True enough I suppose.

[[And now she's considering names as well. Though oh boy, yawn interrupting her train of thought.]]

I would likely wish to keep within a general theme of my other three.

Yeah.

[Don't think he didn't notice that yawn.]

I might finally be, yes, however I still have studying to do.

[[Pulling herself back to her own books now.]]

[Frowny face. Wrong answer, Rose!]

But if you're tired you should go to sleep. You can always finish reading this stuff tomorrow. The books aren't going anywhere after all.
