Once there, ask for a map of the forest outside, so you don't get lost. That place can be awful to traverse through. Head to Violet after that. You can either then go north to the shortcut leading to Goldenrod or south towards Azalea. Why would you want to go to Azalea? To collect gym badges. The first is in Violet. Why would you want to do that instead of use the shortcut? Because I am sure there are plenty of people in Goldenrod who would enjoy giving you a punch to the face once you arrive, as you were quite the asshole before.
As to why you would complicate things, you were in a relationship with Karkat before, and now you don't remember. That might make things terribly awkward.
